Shamalka Perera, PhD
Principal Consultant
With an academic background in Human Resource Management (HRM), I developed a strong passion for fostering positive work cultures where employees can truly reach their full potential. A pivotal moment in my journey occurred when I read an article by Shore et al. (2011) on 'Work Group Inclusion.' The article discussed the 'Optimal Distinctiveness Theory' (ODT), which explains how individuals feel included when their needs for both belongingness and uniqueness are equally met. I was captivated by the idea that these two seemingly opposing needs—belonging and individuality—can coexist to make someone feel truly included.
Reflecting on my own experience, I realised how fundamental the need to belong is for every individual, while also recognising the importance of retaining one’s unique identity. This insight inspired me to help others feel a sense of belonging in the workplace, while also embracing their authentic selves. To deepen my understanding of these concepts, I pursued a PhD, where I explored the experiences of inclusion among IT employees in New Zealand. During this time, I also had the opportunity to present my research studies at international conferences to positive acclaim and publish several papers. Additionally, as a polyglot, I speak four languages, including English and French, which allows me to connect with a diverse range of people and cultures.
With extensive consulting experience in the education sector, I combine my expertise and lived experiences to help organisations drive meaningful transformations for both employers and employees. Viridian initially started by offering Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) services, but due to growing demand, we have successfully expanded our offerings to address other key areas of organisational development. Committed to fostering positive change, my goal is to support organisational success by cultivating healthier, more inclusive work cultures. By acting as a bridge between employers and employees, I facilitate open communication and collaboration. Through fostering positive work environments, organisations can enjoy key benefits such as improved job satisfaction, enhanced performance and productivity, greater innovation and reduced employee turnover.

Why did we choose the name 'Viridian'?
Viridian is the name of this beautiful colour you see in the background of this section. It is an intense green pigment with a bluish touch. Viridian symbolises removing toxicity and thus aligns well with our vision and mission.
